Blinds for New Builds & Renovations
The best time to plan some window treatments is before the room is finished. For new builds, extensions and major renovations, thinking early about power, recesses and large glazing avoids compromises later.

What usually matters
- Power for motorisation – mains-powered blinds and curtains need cabling in the right place before walls are finished.
- Recesses and pelmets – concealed blind pockets and recessed curtain tracks have to be built in.
- Fixings – plasterboard, steel lintels and plaster depth all affect where brackets can go.
- Large and unusual glazing – roof lanterns, gables, corner glazing and wide doors.
- Consistency – a calm look across the whole house.
Plan power early
If there is any chance you will want motorised blinds or motorised curtains, talk to us before first fix. Mains-powered systems need a supply at each blind position; getting that cabling in place during the build is far simpler than chasing walls later. Battery or rechargeable options exist on selected systems, but where mains power is planned in from the start, you keep the choice open. Which controls and integrations are available depends on the system chosen.
We can give your electrician or builder clear information on where power and recesses are needed, so they can plan it into the build.
Often a good fit
- Motorised blinds on high, wide or hard-to-reach glazing.
- Roof lantern blinds and gable window blinds – designed alongside the glazing rather than as an afterthought.
- Perfect Fit blinds on compatible doors and windows, sitting in the frame with no drilling into new plaster.
- Bifold door blinds – planned around how the doors fold and stack.
- Wave curtains on recessed or ceiling tracks in main living areas.
- Shutters in street-facing rooms for a consistent outward look.
Depends on the build
- Concealed blind pockets give a very clean finish but must be sized for the chosen blind, which means choosing the product early.
- Ceiling-recessed curtain tracks need the right depth and a secure fixing above the plasterboard.
- Shutters need suitable window depth and clearance for handles; check before window boards are fitted.
Usually compare another solution
- Waiting until the decorating is finished to think about motorisation usually means relying on batteries, surface cables or visible trunking.
- Buying the same blind for every window rarely suits every room. A consistent palette with the right treatment room by room works better.
A whole-home plan
A simple way to approach it is to choose a colour palette first, then the treatment for each room. For example:
- Roller or cellular blinds in bedrooms, with blackout where needed.
- Shutters in street-facing rooms.
- Perfect Fit blinds on selected doors and windows.
- Wave curtains in main living areas.
- Motorised systems on glazing that is hard to reach.
Our room pages, such as bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms, explain what tends to work in each.

Renovations and extensions
The same thinking applies to a new kitchen extension or loft conversion. Large glazing, roof lanterns and bifold doors are often specified before anyone considers how they will be shaded. If you share your plans or window schedule with us, we can flag where a blind will need space, where it will stack and where a power supply would be useful.
