Pergolas
Pergolas and pergola shading for defined outdoor spaces. A structural decision as much as a shading one, so we talk through the ground, the wall, the wind and the permissions before anything is specified.

A pergola is a framed structure that defines an outdoor space, usually a seating or dining area, and can carry shading overhead and sometimes at the sides. Where an awning projects from a wall, a pergola stands on its own posts, either freestanding or connected to the house. That makes it a bigger decision, and one that involves the ground, the structure and sometimes permissions as much as the fabric or roof.
We are happy to talk through pergola and pergola-shading ideas. Because every project is different, whether a particular structure is something we can supply and install is something we confirm early, before you spend time on details.
Pergola, awning or external screen?
Choose a pergola when
- You want to create a defined outdoor room rather than shade a strip next to the house.
- The seating area is away from the wall, or the wall is not suitable for an awning.
- You want shading overhead with the option of side screening to reduce wind or overlooking, where the system allows.
Consider something else when
- You mainly want shade next to the house on sunny afternoons: an awning is simpler.
- The main problem is heat or glare through windows and doors: external solar shading or ZIP screens act directly on the glass.
- The problem is inside the room only: an internal blind may be enough.
Types of overhead shading
Pergola shading broadly falls into two approaches. Some systems use a fabric roof that can be extended or retracted along the frame, giving shade when you want it and open sky when you do not. Others use rotating louvres that can be angled to control sun and ventilation. How each behaves in rain and wind, what drainage it needs, and whether it can be motorised or fitted with lighting or side screens all depend on the specific system. We would rather explain the trade-offs for your space than list features that may not apply.
Structural and planning questions
A pergola is a structure, so it raises questions that a blind or awning does not:
- Ground and foundations. The posts need a sound base. Patios, decking and lawns each need a different approach, and what lies underneath matters.
- Connection to the house. If the pergola is fixed to the building, the wall needs checking just as it would for an awning.
- Drainage. Overhead covers shed water, and it needs somewhere sensible to go.
- Wind exposure. Open and elevated gardens put more load on a structure and its shading.
- Power. Motorised roofs, lighting or heating, where supported, need a supply planned in.
- Permissions. Depending on size, height, position and the property, planning permission or other consents may need checking, particularly for listed buildings, conservation areas and flats. We cannot give planning advice, so please confirm with your local planning authority.
Any pergola specification, including size, layout, fixings, drainage and controls, is only confirmed after a site survey. If a structural or planning question needs a specialist, we will say so.
Orientation and how you use the space
The most useful thing you can tell us is when you use the garden. A pergola for morning coffee on an east-facing patio needs different thinking from one covering an evening dining table in the west sun, where low sun comes in from the side and side screening may matter more than the roof. Tell us the direction, the times you sit out, and whether wind or overlooking bothers you, and we will be able to say whether a pergola is the right direction.
