Café Style Shutters

How café style shutters work

Café style shutters cover only the lower part of the window, usually up to a sash meeting rail, a transom or a height agreed at the survey. The upper glass is left clear. The panels hinge open like a full shutter and the louvres tilt to adjust the view and light.

The idea is simple: screen the part of the window people can see into, and leave the rest open to daylight and sky.

Light and privacy

For a room close to a pavement or a neighbour, café shutters block eye-level views without making the whole window feel closed in. Because the top is always open, the room stays bright and you keep a view of the sky and treetops.

It is worth being clear about what café shutters do not do. They do not cover the whole window, they give no privacy or light control in the upper section, and they will not darken a room. That makes them a deliberate design choice rather than a cheaper version of a full shutter.

Materials

Café shutters are available in hardwood, faux-wood and waterproof ranges. In kitchens and bathrooms, where café style is a popular choice, we recommend a moisture-suitable faux-wood or waterproof range.

The window

Café style works particularly well on sash windows, where the shutter can finish at the meeting rail, and on bay windows in front rooms. It also suits kitchens and dining rooms that face a garden or a neighbour. The height of the shutter matters: it should relate to a line in the window, such as a transom or meeting rail, rather than finishing at an arbitrary point.

Café shutters are rarely the right answer on their own in a bedroom, because the top of the window is always uncovered. Upstairs windows overlooked from above are also better suited to a full or tier-on-tier layout.

Made to measure and fitting

We measure each window, agree the finishing height and choose a frame and fixing to suit the reveal. Our fitters install the shutters, check the panels open clear of handles and sills and show you how everything works. Book a free shutter survey to see café style against your own windows.

Honest suitability

Is it right for your window?

Every recommendation comes with a reason. Where something else would serve you better, we say so — and suggest what to consider instead.

Where this works well

  • Rooms close to a pavement Recommended

Screens eye-level views from passers-by while keeping the upper window open to light.

  • Kitchens and dining rooms

Privacy at table and worktop height, with plenty of daylight above.

Worth knowing: Choose a moisture-suitable range near sinks and hobs.

  • Sash and bay windows

The shutter can finish neatly at the meeting rail or transom.

  • Bathrooms With conditions

Gives privacy at the lower window with a waterproof range.

Worth knowing: The upper pane stays uncovered, so it only works where the top of the window is not overlooked or already has obscured glass.

Where we’d suggest something else

  • Bedrooms

Why: The top of the window is always uncovered, so the room cannot be darkened.

The limitation: No light control in the upper window.

    Consider instead: Tier-on-tier shutters

  • Windows overlooked from above

Why: Privacy comes only from the lower section, so views from higher windows are not screened.

    The limitation: No upper-window privacy.

    Consider instead: Full height shutters

Materials and finishes

Hampton faux-wood shutters

Hampton is a faux-wood (HSPVC) shutter handcrafted in the UK. Its 100% waterproof composition makes it well suited to kitchens and bathrooms. It is offered with 63mm, 76mm or 89mm louvres in Full Height, Tier-on-Tier, Café Style and Bay styles, and Hampton shutters carry a 10-year manufacturer's warranty. These details apply to Hampton only; other ranges have their own specifications, which we confirm with your quotation.

Hardwood

Genuine timber with a natural grain, available painted or stained on selected ranges. Hardwood is the traditional choice for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms, but it is not the material we would suggest for rooms that regularly get wet or steamy.

Faux-wood (HSPVC)

A solid engineered material with a painted finish designed to look like timber. Faux-wood is tolerant of moisture and easy to wipe clean, which makes it a practical choice for kitchens, bathrooms and busy family rooms.

Waterproof vinyl

Some ranges use a waterproof vinyl construction intended for high-humidity rooms. Suitability for a shower room or a window that gets splashed is range specific, so we confirm it against the actual window.

Colours, louvres and frames

Colours, louvre widths, frame styles and hinge colours vary from range to range. We bring samples to your survey, and you can also see finishes at our showroom in Soham (call ahead to check what is on display).

Operation and hardware

Tilting the louvres

Most louvred shutters use a tilt rod to angle the louvres together. The traditional option is a rod on the front of the panel; an offset rod sits to one side for a clearer view; and on selected ranges a concealed mechanism hidden on the edge of the louvres removes the visible rod altogether.

Split louvre control

Where the design includes a midrail, the louvres above and below can often be tilted separately, so you can angle the lower louvres for privacy and open the upper ones for light.

Panels and hinges

Panels are hinged to the shutter frame and fold back to clear the window. The number of panels, which way they open and where they fold to are agreed at the survey so they clear handles and furniture.

Child safety

Shutters are operated by hand and have no cords or chains, so there are no looped cords to manage. As with any hinged panel or furniture, adults should open and close the panels and keep small fingers clear of the hinges.

Compared with the alternatives

Tier-on-tier shutters

Tier-on-tier gives you café-style privacy by opening only the top tier, plus full coverage when you want it. It is the flexible alternative if you are unsure whether you will ever need the top covered.

Full height shutters

A simpler complete-window treatment, with louvres from top to bottom. Better for bedrooms and windows overlooked from above.

Roman blinds

Some people pair café shutters with a blind above for evening privacy. A Roman blind adds softness and can be lowered when needed.

Questions we get asked

How high do café style shutters go?

Usually to a natural line in the window, such as a sash meeting rail or transom. We agree the finishing height at the survey so it suits both the window and your privacy needs.

Can I add privacy to the top of the window later?

Not with the same shutter. If you think you might want the top covered, tier-on-tier gives you both options in one design, so it is worth deciding at the survey.

Are café shutters good for bedrooms?

Usually not on their own, because the top of the window is always uncovered. Pairing them with a blind or curtains is one option; full height or tier-on-tier is another.

Can café shutters go in a bathroom?

Yes, in a moisture-suitable range, and where the upper window is not overlooked.
