Motorised Blinds

Motorised is not the same as smart

A blind can use a motor and a handset without being connected to an app or home automation. We help you decide how much control you actually need.

Why motorise?

  • Difficult-to-reach glazing
  • Several blinds operated together
  • Schedules and routines
  • Large or numerous windows
  • Convenient chain-free operation on suitable products
  • Compatible smart-home integration

Which blinds can be motorised?

Motorisation is available on selected roller, Day & Night, pleated, cellular and Perfect Fit systems, and on selected wooden and faux wood blind ranges. Other blind types and specialist glazing are confirmed case by case at the survey.

Battery or mains?

Rechargeable battery power can avoid new cabling but needs sensible access for charging. Mains power is valuable in planned renovations, new builds and larger schemes, where wiring can be coordinated before finishes go on.

Controls

Depending on the system, options can include a handset, wall switch, app, schedules, grouped scenes, voice control and home automation. We only name a specific smart-home platform when the exact hardware supports it.

Planning a new build or renovation?

Talking to us early helps with power locations, cable routes, hidden hardware, grouping and access for future maintenance.

Child safety and everyday use

Motorised blinds have no operating cords or chains, which removes that hazard in children's rooms. They also make blinds that are adjusted many times a day, or that sit behind furniture, much easier to live with. Our free home survey covers the blinds, the power and the controls together.

Honest suitability

Is it right for your window?

Every recommendation comes with a reason. Where something else would serve you better, we say so — and suggest what to consider instead.

Where this works well

  • High and hard-to-reach windows Recommended

A handset or wall switch replaces reaching for a chain or cord.

  • New builds and renovations Recommended

Mains power, switch positions and cable routes can be planned before finishes go on.

  • Several blinds in one room

Blinds can be grouped so they move together from one control.

  • Children's rooms

No operating cords or chains to manage.

Worth knowing: Keep cots and furniture away from the window as with any blind.

  • Roof windows and lanterns Specialist survey

Removes the need to reach overhead glazing.

Worth knowing: Motorisation is system-specific on roof glazing and must be confirmed at survey.

Where we’d suggest something else

Fabrics and finishes

Motorisation is available on selected roller, Day & Night, pleated, cellular and Perfect Fit systems, and on selected wooden and faux wood blind ranges, so the fabrics and finishes are those of the blind you choose.

Motors are hidden within the blind's tube or headrail. Where a cassette is used, it also conceals the roll for a cleaner look.

Controls

Two ways to power a motorised blind:

  • Rechargeable battery: no new wiring, which suits finished rooms and retrofit projects. The blind needs sensible access for charging.
  • Mains power: continuous power, well suited to new builds, renovations and larger schemes where wiring can be planned before decorating.

Control options depend on the system and can include a handset, a wall switch, grouped control of several blinds and schedules. App control and voice control through a compatible smart-home platform are available on selected compatible systems only, and we confirm compatibility before you order.

Child safety

Internal blinds supplied in the UK must meet child-safety requirements, and every blind we fit is supplied with the safety devices those requirements call for, fitted at the correct height.

Motorised blinds remove operating cords and chains, which makes them one of the inherently safer options for children's rooms. They are not the only safe choice: cordless and tensioned blinds, and corded blinds with the correct safety devices, also meet the requirements.

Whatever the control, keep cots, beds and climbable furniture away from the window. See our guide to choosing safe blinds for family homes.

Compared with the alternatives

Roller blinds

Motorised on selected systems, while a manual roller with a chain or cordless operation remains a simple option for reachable windows.

Day & Night blinds

Selected systems can be motorised, which makes fine adjustment of the bands easy from a handset.

Motorised curtains

Motorised tracks bring the same convenience to curtains on large or tall windows.

Questions we get asked

Do motorised blinds need rewiring?

Not always. Battery options can avoid new cabling. Mains power suits renovations and new builds.

Will they work with my smart-home system?

Only certain motors support certain platforms. Tell us what you use and we will confirm what is compatible before you order.

Can I motorise the blinds I already have?

Usually motorisation is specified with the blind rather than added later. We can advise at the survey.

Battery or mains: which should I choose?

Rechargeable battery suits finished rooms where new wiring is unwelcome, with access for charging. Mains suits new builds, renovations and larger schemes. We help you decide at the survey.
