Solid Panel Shutters

How solid panel shutters work

Solid panel shutters replace the familiar field of adjustable louvres with solid, flat or raised panels. They are hinged in the same way as louvred shutters and fold back to clear the window, but when closed they present a solid face to the room.

The look is more substantial and traditional, and it suits period-style bedrooms, living rooms and studies, as well as rooms where the shutters are meant to be a strong architectural feature.

Light and privacy

Light control is different from a louvred shutter. A louvred shutter can vary the light while it stays closed. A solid panel is simpler: closed, it blocks the view completely and cuts out much more light than louvres; open, the window is uncovered.

Solid panels are darker than louvred shutters, but they are not total blackout. Small gaps remain around the panel edges and between panels so they can open and close, and some light will show there. If complete darkness is the priority, we would suggest a blackout blind or curtains alongside the shutters.

Materials

Solid panels are available on selected ranges. Where a range allows it, solid and louvred sections can be combined in one shutter, for example solid panels in the lower half for privacy and louvres above for light. We only offer the combinations the chosen range actually supports.

The window

Solid panels work best on windows where you are happy for the shutter to be either open or closed, such as bedrooms used mainly at night. On a window where you want to adjust daylight through the day while keeping privacy, louvres are more practical. Solid panels also need space to fold back beside the window, just like louvred panels.

Made to measure and fitting

Each shutter is made to your survey measurements, with the panel layout, any solid and louvred mix and the folding positions agreed first. Our fitters install and align the panels and check that they close neatly. Book a free shutter survey to see solid and louvred options side by side.

Honest suitability

Is it right for your window?

Every recommendation comes with a reason. Where something else would serve you better, we say so — and suggest what to consider instead.

Where this works well

  • Period-style bedrooms Recommended

A solid, traditional look that cuts out much more light than louvres when closed.

Worth knowing: Not total blackout; some light shows at the panel edges.

  • Rooms needing strong screening

Closed panels block the view completely.

  • Solid below, louvres above With conditions

Privacy at the lower window with adjustable light above.

Worth knowing: Only on ranges that support mixed designs.

Where we’d suggest something else

  • Rooms needing adjustable daylight

Why: A solid panel is either open or closed; it cannot filter light while closed.

    The limitation: No in-between setting.

    Consider instead: Full height shutters

  • Rooms that need total darkness

Why: Small gaps around the panels let some light through.

The limitation: Darker than louvres, but not blackout.

    Consider instead: Blackout blinds

Materials and finishes

Hardwood

Genuine timber with a natural grain, available painted or stained on selected ranges. Hardwood is the traditional choice for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms, but it is not the material we would suggest for rooms that regularly get wet or steamy.

Faux-wood (HSPVC)

A solid engineered material with a painted finish designed to look like timber. Faux-wood is tolerant of moisture and easy to wipe clean, which makes it a practical choice for kitchens, bathrooms and busy family rooms.

Waterproof vinyl

Some ranges use a waterproof vinyl construction intended for high-humidity rooms. Suitability for a shower room or a window that gets splashed is range specific, so we confirm it against the actual window.

Colours, louvres and frames

Colours, louvre widths, frame styles and hinge colours vary from range to range. We bring samples to your survey, and you can also see finishes at our showroom in Soham (call ahead to check what is on display).

Solid panels

Solid panels, and mixed solid and louvred designs, are available on selected ranges only. We confirm which ranges and finishes support them at the survey.

Operation and hardware

Panels and hinges

Solid panels open and close on hinges like other shutters, and fold back to clear the window. A catch holds each panel closed.

Mixed designs

Where solid and louvred sections are combined, the louvred part uses a tilt rod or, on selected ranges, a concealed tilt mechanism.

Child safety

Shutters are operated by hand and have no cords or chains, so there are no looped cords to manage. As with any hinged panel or furniture, adults should open and close the panels and keep small fingers clear of the hinges.

Compared with the alternatives

Full height shutters

Louvred full height shutters let you adjust light and privacy while the panels stay closed, which suits living spaces used through the day.

Shutter & Shade

Keeps adjustable louvres and adds a shade layer for darker rooms, an alternative if you want both daytime flexibility and better darkness at night.

Blackout curtains

Where darkness matters most, curtains can be layered with shutters or used on their own.

Questions we get asked

Are solid panel shutters blackout?

No. They block much more light than louvred shutters when closed, but small gaps around the panels mean some light will show.

Can I have louvres at the top and solid panels below?

Where the chosen range supports it, yes. We confirm which combinations are available at the survey.

Do solid shutters suit modern homes?

They are most often chosen for period-style rooms, but a flat, painted solid panel can look crisp in a contemporary setting too.

Can I still get daylight with solid shutters?

Only by opening the panels. If you want to filter light with the shutters closed, louvres are the better choice.
