Vertical Blinds

Individual vertical fabric louvres rotate to control privacy and light, then draw aside. That makes vertical blinds particularly useful across wide glazing.

Vertical Blinds

Where they work best

Wide windows, patio and glazed doors, full-height glazing, some bifold arrangements, and homes as well as commercial spaces.

Why people choose them

  • Handle wide spans effectively
  • Adjustable glare and privacy control
  • Different draw and stack configurations may be available
  • Individual louvres can be replaced
  • Decorative, blackout and performance fabrics may be available by range

How they are made

Individual fabric louvres hang from carriers in a headtrack, weighted at the bottom and usually linked by a chain so they stay evenly spaced. One control rotates every louvre together; another draws them to one side, both sides or the centre.

Light and privacy

Angle the louvres to screen a view or cut low sun while keeping daylight; close them for privacy. Blackout fabrics are available on selected ranges, but light still passes between the louvres, so a vertical blind should not be thought of as total blackout.

Moisture

Moisture-resistant and rigid PVC louvres are available on selected ranges for bathrooms, kitchens and busy commercial spaces. We confirm the specific fabric for your room.

Made to measure and fitting

Draw direction, where the louvres stack, clearance for door handles and whether the track fixes to the ceiling, wall or inside the recess are all decided at the free home survey.

Honest suitability

Is it right for your window?

Every recommendation comes with a reason. Where something else would serve you better, we say so — and suggest what to consider instead.

Where this works well

  • Wide windows Recommended

Louvres span wide glazing effectively and draw neatly to one side.

  • Patio and sliding doors Recommended

The blind draws clear of the opening, and the louvres can be angled when closed.

  • Offices and commercial spaces

Practical glare control across large glazing, with replaceable louvres.

  • Bathrooms and kitchens With conditions

Moisture-resistant and rigid PVC louvres are available on selected ranges.

Worth knowing: Only the moisture-resistant ranges suit these rooms. We confirm the fabric at survey.

  • Bifold doors Specialist survey

Can work on some bifold arrangements.

Worth knowing: Depends on how the doors fold and stack and the space above and to the side. Never assumed from the word bifold alone.

Where we’d suggest something else

  • Bedrooms that must be dark

Why: Light passes between the louvres even with a blackout fabric.

The limitation: The gaps are part of how vertical blinds work.

    Consider instead: Blackout blinds

  • Small windows

Why: The stacked louvres can take up a large share of a narrow window.

    Consider instead: Roller blinds

Fabrics and finishes

Fabric louvres in plains, textures and prints, from light-filtering to blackout fabrics depending on the range. Moisture-resistant fabrics and rigid PVC louvres are available on selected ranges for wetter or harder-working rooms.

Individual louvres can be replaced if one is damaged, rather than replacing the whole blind.

Controls

Vertical blinds are usually operated with a cord to draw the louvres and a chain or wand to rotate them, with the required safety devices fitted. The louvres can draw to one side, split to both sides or, on some tracks, open from the centre.

We plan the draw and stack position around how you use the door or window and where furniture sits.

Child safety

Internal blinds supplied in the UK must meet child-safety requirements, and every blind we fit is supplied with the safety devices those requirements call for, fitted at the correct height.

Vertical blinds have a control cord, a rotation chain and usually a bottom chain linking the louvres. We fit cord and chain safety devices at the correct height and position the controls away from where children play. On doors used by children, compare a frame-mounted blind that moves with the door.

Whatever the control, keep cots, beds and climbable furniture away from the window. See our guide to choosing safe blinds for family homes.

Compared with the alternatives

Roller blinds

Better for divided openings and smaller windows, with a compact roll, but raised rather than drawn aside.

Curtains

A full-height textile treatment with more softness and, with the right lining, better room darkening.

Perfect Fit blinds

Fitted to each compatible door panel, so the blind moves with the door instead of hanging across the opening.

Questions we get asked

Which way should the blind draw?

It depends on how you use the door or window and where furniture sits. We plan the draw and stack position at the survey.

Are vertical blinds suitable for bifold doors?

Sometimes. It depends on how the doors fold and the space available. We never promise compatibility from the word bifold alone.

Are they blackout?

Blackout fabrics may be available, but light will still pass between the louvres.

Can a damaged louvre be replaced?

Usually, yes. Individual louvres can be replaced rather than the whole blind, subject to the fabric still being available.
