Roof Window Blinds

A blind on a sloping roof window has to stay controlled against gravity and fit the window system correctly. This is not the place for an ordinary free-hanging roller blind.

Roof Window Blinds

Start with the window

Roof windows are made to set sizes by their manufacturers, and the right blind is matched to the window's make, type and size code rather than measured like an ordinary window. We identify the manufacturer, model and size code, the window's age, the pitch, how high it sits and what you need the blind to do. Blinds are available that are compatible with many common roof-window makes; the exact model and size code are checked at survey.

Why ordinary blinds do not work

A free-hanging blind on a sloping window sags away from the glass and swings when the window is opened. Roof-window blinds are held in place by side guides or channels fixed to the window frame, so the blind stays close to the glass at any angle and moves with the sash when the window is opened.

Options may include

  • Blackout roller blinds that run in side channels, for loft bedrooms
  • Translucent or light-filtering rollers for glare control in studies and bathrooms
  • Pleated and cellular blinds, which stay neat at any position down the window
  • Remote or electric operation for windows out of reach, where the window and system support it

Bedrooms and nurseries

Purpose-designed blackout blinds with guided sides perform much better than an ordinary blind because they are engineered around the window. They greatly reduce light in a loft bedroom, though we will explain at the survey how dark your particular window and blind combination can realistically be. See blackout blinds.

High windows

Roof windows above a stairwell or in a high ceiling are awkward to reach. A long operating rod can help, and powered operation may be available for some windows and systems; we confirm this for your model.

Older or unidentified windows

If the data plate is missing or the window is an older model, compatible blinds may still exist, but we need to measure and check before confirming anything.

Honest suitability

Is it right for your window?

Every recommendation comes with a reason. Where something else would serve you better, we say so — and suggest what to consider instead.

Where this works well

  • Loft bedrooms Recommended

Purpose-designed blackout blinds in side channels darken a loft room far better than an ordinary blind.

  • Roof windows from common manufacturers

Compatible blinds exist for many common roof-window makes, matched to the model and size code.

Worth knowing: The exact model and size code must be checked before ordering.

  • Windows out of easy reach With conditions

An operating rod or powered operation keeps the blind usable.

Worth knowing: Powered operation depends on the window and blind system and is confirmed at survey.

  • Older or unidentified roof windows Specialist survey

Compatible options may still exist once the window is identified.

Worth knowing: Without a data plate or size code we must measure and check before confirming anything.

Where we’d suggest something else

  • A standard free-hanging roller on a sloping window

Why: It sags away from the glass and swings when the window opens.

The limitation: It cannot stay in position on a slope.

Consider instead: A guided roof-window blind

  • Flat-roof lanterns and large overhead glazing

Why: Roof-window blinds are sized for individual roof windows, not multi-pane lanterns.

The limitation: A lantern needs a different, specialist system.

    Consider instead: Roof lantern blinds

Fabrics and finishes

Blackout fabrics in a range of plain colours, plus light-filtering and pleated fabrics for rooms where you want softened daylight rather than darkness. Frame and channel finishes are usually chosen to match the window frame, typically white or a timber tone.

Controls

Most roof-window blinds are moved by hand using a handle on the bottom bar, and stay put at any position along the side guides. An operating rod helps with high windows. Powered or remote operation depends on the window and blind system and is confirmed at survey.

Child safety

Internal blinds supplied in the UK must meet child-safety requirements, following BBSA guidance, and the blinds we fit are supplied with the required safety devices.

Guided roof-window blinds are operated from the bottom bar and have no hanging cords or chains, which suits loft bedrooms and nurseries.

Compared with the alternatives

Roof lantern blinds

For flat-roof lanterns and multi-pane overhead glazing, which need specialist engineered systems rather than roof-window blinds.

Blackout blinds

How blackout levels work across all window types, including where edge light comes from.

Pleated and cellular blinds

Cellular construction adds a layer at the glass and stays neat at any position; available for some roof windows.

Motorised blinds

Where powered operation is possible for your window, it solves the reach problem.

Questions we get asked

How do I find my roof window's details?

There is usually a data plate on the window frame, visible when the window is open. A clear photo of it helps us check compatibility before the survey.

Will a roof window blind fit my window?

Blinds are available that are compatible with many common roof-window makes. We confirm the exact model and size code at the survey before ordering.

Can roof window blinds be motorised?

Powered operation is available for some roof windows and blind systems. It depends on the window, so we confirm it for your model.

Will a blackout roof blind make my loft completely dark?

Guided blackout blinds reduce light far more than an ordinary blind. We explain at the survey how dark your window and blind combination can realistically be.

Does the blind move when I open the window?

Yes. Guided roof-window blinds are fixed to the sash, so they stay in place when the window is opened.
