Shaped Shutters

Some windows deserve to keep their shape. Bespoke shutters can suit arches, circles, triangles, angled heads and other unusual glazing, designed around the geometry instead of hiding it behind a rectangle.

Shaped Shutters

How shaped shutters work

Shaped shutters are made to follow the outline of a non-rectangular window: an arch, a circle, a triangle, an angled head or an apex. Instead of hiding the shape behind a rectangular blind, the shutter frame traces the window, so the shape stays visible from inside the room.

Depending on the geometry, the shaped part of the shutter may have fixed louvres, adjustable louvres or a solid infill, and it may be fixed in place or hinged to open.

Light and privacy

Where the louvres can be adjusted, shaped shutters give the same privacy and light control as a standard shutter. On some shapes the louvres in the shaped section need to be fixed at a set angle, which still filters light and view but cannot be closed further. Shaped shutters are not blackout.

Materials

Not every material can be made in every shape. Some ranges are better suited to curves and angles than others, and the range affects which sections can open. We confirm which materials and finishes are available for your shape before quoting, so there are no surprises later.

The window

Complex shapes can limit panel opening, louvre movement, hinge positions and material choice. It is common for the shaped top of an arched window to stay fixed while the rectangular panels below open normally, or for an apex section to sit above hinged panels. We explain exactly which parts will move before you order.

Shaped shutters work best where there is a matching treatment elsewhere in the room, so the look stays consistent, and where the shape itself is a feature worth keeping. For very large glazed gables or roof windows, a specialist blind is often more practical.

Made to measure and fitting

Shaped work depends on precise measurement. We record angles, radii, frame depth, opening sections, handles and fixing conditions. A photo is a useful starting point for early advice, but it never replaces the survey. Our fitters install and align the shaped frame and check any moving sections. Honest suitability

Is it right for your window?

Every recommendation comes with a reason. Where something else would serve you better, we say so — and suggest what to consider instead.

Where this works well

  • Arched windows Specialist survey

The frame can follow the curve so the arch stays visible.

Worth knowing: The arched section often needs to stay fixed, with louvres set at an angle.

  • Apex and angled windows Specialist survey

Angled heads can be followed with a shaped frame.

Worth knowing: Some angled sections may be fixed or have limited louvre movement.

  • Circular windows Specialist survey

A round window can be fitted with a shaped shutter where the range allows.

Worth knowing: Availability depends on size and range; the shutter is usually fixed.

  • Rooms with shutters elsewhere

Keeps a consistent look where standard windows in the same room have shutters.

Where we’d suggest something else

  • Large glazed gables

Why: Very large shaped glazing can be beyond what shutter panels can practically cover.

The limitation: Size and weight limit shutter options.

    Consider instead: Gable window blinds

  • Roof windows

Why: Shutters are designed for vertical windows and doors.

The limitation: Not designed for sloping glazing.

    Consider instead: Roof window blinds

Materials and finishes

Hardwood

Genuine timber with a natural grain, available painted or stained on selected ranges. Hardwood is the traditional choice for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms, but it is not the material we would suggest for rooms that regularly get wet or steamy.

Faux-wood (HSPVC)

A solid engineered material with a painted finish designed to look like timber. Faux-wood is tolerant of moisture and easy to wipe clean, which makes it a practical choice for kitchens, bathrooms and busy family rooms.

Waterproof vinyl

Some ranges use a waterproof vinyl construction intended for high-humidity rooms. Suitability for a shower room or a window that gets splashed is range specific, so we confirm it against the actual window.

Colours, louvres and frames

Colours, louvre widths, frame styles and hinge colours vary from range to range. We bring samples to your survey, and you can also see finishes at our showroom in Soham (call ahead to check what is on display).

Shapes and materials

Shaped availability is range specific. Some materials can be made in curves and angles that others cannot, so we confirm the range for your window at the survey.

Operation and hardware

Tilting the louvres

Most louvred shutters use a tilt rod to angle the louvres together. The traditional option is a rod on the front of the panel; an offset rod sits to one side for a clearer view; and on selected ranges a concealed mechanism hidden on the edge of the louvres removes the visible rod altogether.

Split louvre control

Where the design includes a midrail, the louvres above and below can often be tilted separately, so you can angle the lower louvres for privacy and open the upper ones for light.

Panels and hinges

Panels are hinged to the shutter frame and fold back to clear the window. The number of panels, which way they open and where they fold to are agreed at the survey so they clear handles and furniture.

Fixed sections

On many shapes the shaped section is fixed, with louvres set at an angle or a solid infill. Hinged panels below or beside it open in the normal way.

Child safety

Shutters are operated by hand and have no cords or chains, so there are no looped cords to manage. As with any hinged panel or furniture, adults should open and close the panels and keep small fingers clear of the hinges.

Compared with the alternatives

Shaped window blinds

Specialist blinds can cover some shapes with less depth and weight. They suit windows where the shape does not need to stay visible.

Gable window blinds

For large glazed gables and apex windows, gable blinds are usually more practical than shutters.

Full height shutters

If only part of the window is shaped, full height shutters on the rectangular section with a fixed shaped top can give a coherent look.

Questions we get asked

Can the arched part of the shutter open?

Sometimes it needs to stay fixed. It depends on the shape, its size and the range. We explain which sections will move before you order.

Can you give me an idea from a photo?

Yes, as a starting point. Angles and radii are confirmed at the survey before anything is made.

Can every shape be made in every material?

No. Shaped availability is range specific, so we confirm the materials and finishes available for your window.

Are shaped shutters blackout?

No. Like other louvred shutters they reduce light but do not block it completely.
