Wooden Blinds

Why people choose them

  • Genuine timber with natural grain and variation
  • Tilt the slats to adjust privacy and daylight
  • Slat sizes and finishes depend on the range
  • Work in traditional and contemporary rooms
  • Typically lighter than comparable faux wood constructions

Tilting the slats can screen street or neighbour views while still letting useful daylight in.

Choosing a slat size

Slat width changes both the look and the view out. Larger slats mean fewer horizontal lines. Physical slats also create a stack at the top when the blind is fully raised, which we take into account at the survey.

The limitation worth knowing

Real timber is not our default recommendation for persistently humid, wet or splash-prone rooms. There, faux wood or another moisture-suitable product is usually the better choice.

How they are made

Timber slats are strung on ladder cords or decorative tapes from a headrail. A tilt control turns every slat together, and lift cords raise the whole blind so the slats stack neatly at the top.

Light and privacy

Tilt the slats upwards and passers-by see little while daylight still reaches the ceiling; close them fully and the room is well screened. Closed slats reduce light a great deal, but thin lines of light still pass between them, so a wooden blind is not a blackout product.

Made to measure and fitting

Slat size, stack height, handle clearance and whether the blind sits inside or outside the recess are all decided at the free home survey. We bring slat samples so you can see the finishes in your own light.

Honest suitability

Is it right for your window?

Every recommendation comes with a reason. Where something else would serve you better, we say so — and suggest what to consider instead.

Where this works well

  • Living rooms Recommended

Natural timber adds warmth, and the slats let you balance privacy and daylight through the day.

  • Street-facing windows

Tilting the slats upward screens passers-by while daylight still reaches the room.

  • Studies and dining rooms

Precise control over glare and a structured finish that suits traditional and contemporary rooms.

  • Bedrooms With conditions

Good privacy and a warm look.

Worth knowing: Closed slats are not blackout. Pair with a blackout blind or lined curtains if you need a dark room.

Where we’d suggest something else

  • Bathrooms and steamy rooms

Why: Real timber reacts to repeated steam and splashes.

The limitation: Slats can warp or mark over time in humid positions.

    Consider instead: Faux wood blinds

  • Rooms that must be dark

Why: Light passes between closed slats and around the edges.

The limitation: A better slat does not solve this; it is how slatted blinds work.

    Consider instead: Blackout blinds

  • Windows with little space above the glass

Why: Raised slats form a stack that can sit across the top of the glass.

The limitation: The stack depends on drop and slat size.

    Consider instead: Roller blinds

Fabrics and finishes

Real timber slats, with natural grain and colour variation from one slat to the next. Depending on the range, finishes run from pale and natural tones through warmer stains to painted colours, in a choice of slat widths.

Some ranges offer decorative tapes in place of the standard ladder cords, for a softer, more finished look. We show you real samples at your survey rather than relying on a screen.

Controls

Most wooden blinds use a tilt control to angle the slats and lift cords to raise the blind, with the cords fitted with the required safety devices.

Motorised options are available on selected wooden blind ranges, which suits high windows or blinds you adjust many times a day. We confirm what is available for your window size at the survey.

Child safety

Internal blinds supplied in the UK must meet child-safety requirements, and every blind we fit is supplied with the safety devices those requirements call for, fitted at the correct height.

Wooden blinds use lift cords and ladder cords, so the correct safety devices are essential. We fit cord cleats or tensioners at the right height and set the cords so no loops are left within reach. In a child's room, a motorised option on a selected range, or a cordless alternative such as a hand-operated pleated blind, removes operating cords altogether.

Whatever the control, keep cots, beds and climbable furniture away from the window. See our guide to choosing safe blinds for family homes.

Compared with the alternatives

Faux wood blinds

A wood-style slat in manufactured materials, with moisture-resistant options for kitchens and bathrooms. Usually heavier, with a more even finish.

Venetian blinds

Slim aluminium slats with a smaller stack and a wipeable surface, for a lighter, more contemporary look.

Shutters

A fitted, architectural treatment with adjustable louvres, and a more permanent change to the window.

Roller blinds

Compact and simple, with blackout and moisture-suitable fabrics, but no adjustable privacy setting.

Questions we get asked

Are wooden blinds blackout?

No. Closed slats reduce light a great deal, but they do not create total blackout.

Can I have them in a bathroom?

We would not normally recommend real wood where there is regular steam or splashing. Faux wood is the usual alternative.

How much stack will there be at the top?

It depends on the drop and slat size. We show you at the survey so there are no surprises.

Can wooden blinds be motorised?

Motorised options are available on selected wooden blind ranges. We confirm what suits your window at the survey.
