Tracked Shutters

Tracked shutters are designed for wide openings, where conventional hinged panels would be cumbersome. The panels run on a track and fold or slide aside, depending on the system.

Tracked Shutters

How tracked shutters work

Tracked shutters hang from a track fixed above the opening, usually with a guide or track at the bottom as well. Instead of each panel hinging from the side of a frame, the panels run along the track and either slide past each other or fold together in pairs to stack at one or both sides.

This makes it practical to cover wide openings that would need an unmanageable number of hinged panels.

Light and privacy

Each tracked panel has adjustable louvres, so you can angle them for privacy or daylight while the panels stay closed across the opening. When you want the full view or access to the garden, slide or fold the panels aside. Like all louvred shutters, tracked shutters reduce light but are not blackout.

Materials

Tracked configurations are offered on several of the ranges we supply, in timber-look and moisture-tolerant materials. Because the panels hang from a track, the weight and size of each panel affect which ranges suit a particular opening. We confirm the range and hardware at the survey.

The window

Tracked shutters are well suited to patio doors, sliding doors, large glazed openings and room dividers. They can also work across some bifold doors, provided the shutter sits independently of the doors and there is room to stack the panels without blocking the bifold stack.

Space still matters. Open panels need somewhere to go. We check the width and height of the opening, the fixings available at the top and bottom, the floor and threshold, where the panels will stack, the door handles, the route people walk through and how wide the clear opening needs to be. Whether a bottom track is needed depends on the system, and not every tracked system uses the same hardware.

Made to measure and fitting

The track, panels and stack position are designed from your survey measurements. Our fitters install and level the track, hang the panels and check they run smoothly and stack where planned. Book a free shutter survey to talk through your opening.

Honest suitability

Is it right for your window?

Every recommendation comes with a reason. Where something else would serve you better, we say so — and suggest what to consider instead.

Where this works well

  • Patio and sliding doors Recommended

Panels slide or fold aside to clear the door, with louvres for privacy when closed.

  • Large glazed openings

A track supports many panels across a wide span.

Worth knowing: Needs enough wall space for the panels to stack.

  • Room dividers

Tracked panels can screen one space from another while letting light through.

  • Bifold doors With conditions

Can work where the shutter sits independently of the doors.

Worth knowing: Needs space to stack the shutter panels without blocking the bifold stack or access.

Where we’d suggest something else

  • Openings with no space to stack

Why: The panels need wall space at the side when open.

The limitation: Without stacking space, open panels would block the glass or doorway.

    Consider instead: Perfect Fit blinds

  • Standard-sized windows

Why: A track adds hardware that a normal window does not need.

The limitation: Hinged panels are simpler for most windows.

    Consider instead: Full height shutters

Materials and finishes

Hardwood

Genuine timber with a natural grain, available painted or stained on selected ranges. Hardwood is the traditional choice for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms, but it is not the material we would suggest for rooms that regularly get wet or steamy.

Faux-wood (HSPVC)

A solid engineered material with a painted finish designed to look like timber. Faux-wood is tolerant of moisture and easy to wipe clean, which makes it a practical choice for kitchens, bathrooms and busy family rooms.

Waterproof vinyl

Some ranges use a waterproof vinyl construction intended for high-humidity rooms. Suitability for a shower room or a window that gets splashed is range specific, so we confirm it against the actual window.

Colours, louvres and frames

Colours, louvre widths, frame styles and hinge colours vary from range to range. We bring samples to your survey, and you can also see finishes at our showroom in Soham (call ahead to check what is on display).

Operation and hardware

Moving the panels

Panels slide along the track or fold in pairs to stack at the side. Depending on the system, panels may run on one or more parallel tracks.

Tilting the louvres

Each panel has its own louvres, tilted with a front rod, an offset rod or, on selected ranges, a concealed mechanism.

Top and bottom hardware

Some systems use a bottom track or floor guide to keep panels steady; others use a top track with minimal floor hardware. We confirm the hardware for your opening, including how it meets the floor and threshold.

Child safety

Shutters are operated by hand and have no cords or chains, so there are no looped cords to manage. As with any hinged panel or furniture, adults should open and close the panels and keep small fingers clear of the hinges and track.

Compared with the alternatives

French door shutters

For a pair of French doors, hinged panels fitted to or around the doors can be simpler than a track.

Bifold door blinds

Blinds fitted to each bifold door move with the door, so there is nothing to stack separately.

Wave curtains

Curtains on a track give a softer full-height treatment across a wide opening and help darken the room.

Vertical blinds

A lighter-weight way to shade a wide opening, with vanes that rotate and draw aside.

Questions we get asked

Do tracked shutters need a floor track?

It depends on the system. Some use a bottom track or floor guide, others need very little at floor level. We confirm the hardware for your opening.

Are tracked shutters good for bifold doors?

They can work where the shutter sits independently of the doors and there is room to stack the panels clear of the bifold stack.

How much space do the panels need when open?

It depends on the number and width of the panels and whether they fold or slide. We plan the stack position at the survey.

Can tracked shutters be used as a room divider?

Yes, they can screen one space from another while letting light through the louvres.
