Blinds, Shutters & Curtains in Little Shelford

Little Shelford has its own adopted village design guide, prepared from local research. We take a similarly individual approach, measuring and advising on each opening rather than working to standard sizes.

Lime pleated blind

South Cambridgeshire adopted a village design guide for Little Shelford in 2021/22, drawn up from local research and evidence. We mention it because it signals something we see in the way we work here: this is a village where people tend to care about how things look, and where one house can be quite unlike its neighbour.

We don't claim there is a typical Little Shelford window. What we can offer is a survey that treats each opening on its own terms.

What "made to measure" means in practice

A made-to-measure blind or shutter is built to the exact dimensions we take, allowing for any irregularities. For older or individually built homes, that can mean:

  • measuring width at the top, middle and bottom of a recess, and using the tightest figure for an inside fit;
  • noting obstructions such as handles, sills or window boards;
  • deciding whether a face fit would look better where a recess is shallow.

Our guide to what made to measure really means goes into more detail.

Sympathetic choices

For character rooms, many people consider Roman blinds, pinch pleat curtains or full-height shutters. For studies and home offices, wooden blinds give precise control over screen glare. We are happy to say where we think a different option would serve you better.

Curtain tracks and poles

In character rooms, the pole or track matters as much as the fabric. A pole is a visible, decorative feature; a track is more discreet and can bend round a bay. Where the ceiling is close to the top of the window, a ceiling-fixed track may be the neater choice. We'll measure the space above and either side of each window so the curtains can hang properly and stack clear of the glass when open. See tracks and poles for more.

Questions we get asked

How do you measure an uneven recess?

We measure at several points and use the tightest dimension for an inside fit, or suggest a face fit if that will look better.

Can I see fabrics before the survey?

Yes. We bring samples to your home, and our Soham showroom is open on weekdays if you'd like to look first.
