Cherry-finish wooden blinds in a living room

Burwell has two conservation areas. East Cambridgeshire's appraisals for High Town and North Street both emphasise local distinctiveness and a historic character that has evolved over time, and both areas are covered by Article 4 directions.

Article 4 directions deal with specified external alterations. They don't generally control internal blinds, curtains or shutters. If your home is listed, check with East Cambridgeshire District Council before fitting anything fixed; we can't give planning advice.

Measuring older buildings properly

Older buildings can have windows that are unevenly set, reveals that narrow from top to bottom, or frames that have moved over time. Our surveys allow for this:

  1. We measure width and height at several points.
  2. We note obstructions: window boards, handles, catches.
  3. We decide between recess and face fitting window by window.
  4. For shutters, we take the additional measurements needed to build panels to the opening.

Products that suit Burwell homes

We don't prescribe, but these often come up: Roman blinds and pinch pleat curtains for traditional rooms; wooden blinds for studies; bay window shutters where there's a bay. In newer parts of the village, practical rollers and Perfect Fit are common, subject to the frames.

Keeping an older room warm

Older buildings can feel draughty around windows. Interlined curtains, drawn in the evening, add a substantial layer between the room and the glass; cellular blinds are a slimmer option that trap air in their structure. Neither will fix a draughty frame, but both can make a room feel more comfortable, and we'll explain the difference without overstating it. See thermal comfort for more detail.

If draughts are a problem, it's worth having the frames and seals checked as well. Curtains and blinds work best alongside windows that close properly, rather than as a substitute for repairs. We'll mention it if we notice something at survey, but we don't carry out window repairs ourselves.

Questions we get asked

Do Burwell's Article 4 directions affect internal blinds?

Article 4 directions deal with specified external changes, not internal blinds or curtains generally. Listed buildings are different, so check with the council if yours is listed.

Can shutters be made for an out-of-square window?

Shutters are built to the opening, so we take extra measurements to allow for irregularities. Suitability is confirmed at survey.
