Blinds, Shutters & Curtains in Exning
Exning is a historic village with its own conservation area, about 2 km north of Newmarket town centre. It has a different feel from the town, and we approach window coverings here with that in mind.

West Suffolk's conservation appraisal for Exning describes a defined historic core with a traditional landscape and building setting. It lies roughly 2 km north of Newmarket town centre, but it is very much a village, and the questions we're asked here differ from those in the town.
Village homes, individual windows
In a historic village, windows aren't always uniform. Some are small, some deeply set, some slightly out of true. We measure each opening on its own and choose fitting positions to suit.
A few pairings that often work well:
- Deep reveals: roller or Roman blinds set inside the recess.
- Shallow reveals: pleated blinds, or a face-fitted blind.
- Rooms where softness matters: interlined curtains.
- Where you want structure: solid panel or louvred shutters, subject to space for the panels to open.
Garden rooms and extensions
If your home has a later extension or conservatory, conservatory blinds and bifold door blinds are worth a look. For outdoor areas, see outdoor living.

Making the most of daylight
Smaller windows in older homes can leave rooms feeling dark, so it pays to choose treatments that clear the glass fully when open. Blinds fitted above the recess rather than inside it can be raised completely out of the way. Curtains on a pole that extends beyond the frame stack against the wall rather than over the glass. Light, light-filtering fabrics keep rooms brighter during the day. It's often better to add a separate layer for evening privacy than to choose one heavy treatment that darkens the room all day. We'll suggest options that let as much light in as possible when you want it.
Where rooms are small, lighter colours and a blind that sits neatly within the recess tend to feel less crowded than heavy curtains, though a well-chosen curtain can still work beautifully in the right room.
