A town with real period character

West Suffolk's conservation area appraisal for Newmarket describes a traditional market town that grew rapidly in the 19th century, with significant Regency, Victorian and Edwardian building stock in the historic town: villas, terraced houses and larger buildings, set in a townscape strongly shaped by racing. It also records later 20th-century change.

So while not every Newmarket home is a period property, many in the historic town are, and that shapes a lot of our conversations here.

Tall, narrow openings

Older town properties often have taller, narrower windows than modern houses. That affects:

  • Stack height: a Roman blind on a tall window gathers into a deeper stack at the top when raised, which can take up more glass.
  • Proportion: tier-on-tier shutters can break up a tall window and let you open just the top.
  • Curtain length: floor-length pinch pleat or wave curtains emphasise height; we'll help you decide where the pole or track should sit.

Privacy in town

Terraced streets bring passers-by close to front windows. Café-style shutters, sheers and Day & Night blinds keep the room private while letting daylight in.

Modern homes too

Elsewhere in the town, more recent homes raise different questions: frame-fitted blinds for uPVC windows, patio door solutions and motorisation for awkward windows. We cover all of these.

Keeping period features visible

In older rooms with attractive architraves or window shutters of their own, it's often worth choosing a treatment that doesn't hide them. An inside-recess blind or a slim track can leave mouldings visible. We'll point out anything that might be covered before you decide.

Where original internal shutters survive, it may be better to restore and use them rather than cover them. We're happy to advise on blinds or curtains that complement them instead.

Questions we get asked

Will a Roman blind block too much of a tall window?

When raised, a Roman blind stacks at the top. On tall windows we can fit it higher so the stack sits above the glass, where space allows.

Do you cover Newmarket even though it's in Suffolk?

Send us your postcode and we'll confirm. Our showroom in Soham is north of Newmarket.

Are shutters suitable for period town houses?

Often, yes, as a design choice. We check reveal depth and how the panels will open before recommending them.
